The next generation of Ghanaian boxing talent will take centre stage at the Bukom Boxing Arena in Accra on Friday, February 27, as the National Individual Amateur Boxing Championship reaches its climax.
Twenty-four boxers have punched their way through a gruelling field of 145 competitors to secure their spots in 12 weight category finals.
At stake is more than just a gold medal; the winners are expected to form the backbone of the Black Bombers, Ghana’s national team, ahead of a busy international calendar.
The tournament has been a masterclass in coaching for Wisdom Boxing Gym, which has successfully placed five fighters into the finals, the highest of any club in the country.
The gym has already guaranteed itself at least one national champion in the 63.5kg light-welterweight division.
In a rare “all-Wisdom” affair, the highly experienced Abdul Wahid Omar, a 2014 Commonwealth bronze medallist and Rio 2016 Olympian, will face stablemate Henry Owusu.
Other gyms looking to upset the odds include Black Panthers Gym with three finalists, alongside strong representation from Sea View Boxing Club and the Charles Quarshie Boxing Foundation.
The final line-up was completed on Wednesday, February 11, following a night of high-intensity semi-finals at the Seconds Out Boxing Gym.
In the 67kg welterweight division, both Precious Akai Nettey of Attoh Quarshie and Issah Okine of Wisdom survived razor-thin split decisions to progress.
Their opponents, Robert Tetteh and Robert Tagoe, pushed them to the limit across three rounds, leaving the judges with unenviable tasks. Nettey and Okine will now clash on Friday for the national title.
Fans heading to the 4,000-capacity arena, which famously hosted the 2023 African Games, will have their eyes on several high-profile bouts.
In the 48kg light flyweight division, Daniel Amoo of Sea View faces Lionel Owoo of Wisdom, while the 57kg featherweight final sees 2024 SWAG Boxer of the Year Amadu Mohammed take on Reginald Lamptey.
The 60kg lightweight clash between James Okoe and Ebenezer Ankrah is already being tipped by scouts as a potential “fight of the night.”
Meanwhile, the heavy hitters will close out the evening as Isaac Asiedu and Daniel Plange vie for the super-heavyweight crown in the +92kg category.
For Ghana Boxing Federation President Dauda Fuseni, the stakes could not be higher.
This championship serves as the primary selection platform for the 2026 Commonwealth Games in Glasgow, Scotland, starting this July.
Fuseni has praised the incredible heart shown by the young athletes and urged fans to pack the arena for what promises to be a historic night.
Beyond the senior squad, the federation is also scouting for the Black Rockets youth national team ahead of the Youth Olympic Games qualifiers in Dakar later this year.
The event, supported by major sponsors including Guinness Ghana and Twellium Industries, takes place at a venue that honours legends like Azumah Nelson and Ike Quartey, ensuring the spirit of Ghanaian boxing history is present as the newest kings are crowned.
