Two Killed, 19 Injured in Multi-Vehicle Crash on N1 Near Achimota Footbridge

Two people have been confirmed dead and 19 others injured after a multi-vehicle accident on the N1 Highway near the Achimota Footbridge in Accra.

The crash occurred on Monday, February 23, and involved a Kia motor truck with registration number GG 1304-18, a Sprinter bus (GX 8325-13), and a Volvo trailer (GT 7856-20).

In a statement shared on Facebook on Tuesday, February 24, the Ghana National Fire Service (GNFS) said personnel from its National Headquarters responded swiftly after receiving a distress call at 19:58 GMT.

Rescue teams worked to extricate victims trapped in the wreckage and administered first aid at the scene before transporting the injured to medical facilities. Of the 21 people involved in the collision, two were pronounced dead at the scene, while the remaining 19 were rushed to the Achimota Hospital and the 37 Military Hospital for further treatment.

The GNFS noted that officers, in collaboration with other emergency responders, secured the accident scene, managed traffic, and cleared the debris to restore the free flow of vehicles along the busy highway.

Authorities say investigations are ongoing to determine the cause of the crash.

The Service extended its condolences to the bereaved families and wished the injured a speedy recovery. It also urged motorists to adhere strictly to road safety regulations to help prevent similar incidents.
