Jonathan Nkrumah Ofori clinches 400m thriller at National Athletics Open

Jonathan Nkrumah Ofori has claimed a hard-fought victory in the U20 boys’ 400m final, narrowly defeating rival Blessed Junior Owusu in a grandstand finish at the inaugural National Athletics Open Championships.

In a race that electrified the crowd in Cape Coast, the Central Region standout clocked a blistering 45.33 seconds to secure the gold.

His victory came by the thinnest of margins—just 0.27 seconds—following a relentless pursuit by the Ashanti Region’s Owusu.

The race unfolded as a tactical battle of nerves and endurance. Ofori seized control on the backstretch, maintaining a powerful stride that forced the rest of the field to chase.

As the athletes rounded the final bend, Owusu mounted a fierce challenge, surging through the final 50 metres.

However, Ofori held his form to cross the line first, leaving Owusu to take silver with a time of 45.60 seconds.

The depth of talent was further highlighted by Opoku Godfred, also representing the Ashanti Region, who secured the bronze medal in 45.62 seconds.

Athletics analysts are already pointing to these results as a sign of a “golden generation” for Ghana’s quarter-mile programme.

To have three junior athletes finishing within 0.29 seconds of each other—all clocking sub-46-second times—suggests a significant boost in the country’s podium potential for upcoming international meets.

The final standings saw Jonathan Nkrumah Ofori take the top spot in 45.33 seconds, followed by Blessed Junior Owusu in 45.60 seconds, and Opoku Godfred rounding out the podium in 45.62 seconds.
