A suspected armed robber has been shot dead following a gun battle with police along the Atebubu-Ejura stretch of the Ejura-Atebubu-Yeji highway in the Ashanti Region.
The incident occurred around 11:10 p.m. on March 25, 2026, when officers from the Police Intelligence Directorate (PID) Headquarters were conducting routine patrols near Kasei.
According to police, the patrol team encountered a group of about five armed men who attempted to stop their unmarked vehicle using flashlights. The suspects, reportedly armed with an AK-47 rifle, single-barrel guns, machetes, and sticks, opened fire in a bid to force the officers to halt.
The officers returned fire, leading to an exchange of gunshots. One of the suspects was hit and collapsed, while the others fled into a nearby bush.
A search conducted on the injured suspect led to the retrieval of several items, including a single-barrel gun, five live cartridges, two spent cartridges, two spent AK-47 rounds, and six live AK-47 ammunition.
Police also recovered multiple mobile phones, including a Samsung smartphone, a Tecno Spark 5 device, and six assorted keypad phones, as well as a machete, a black hat, and a side bag containing coins and two wristwatches. An amount of GH¢310.00 was also found on him.
The suspect was rushed to the Atebubu Government Hospital but was pronounced dead on arrival. His body has been deposited at the hospital morgue for preservation and autopsy.
Police say efforts are ongoing to track down and arrest the remaining members of the gang who escaped.
