Ghana’s Sports Fund hits major milestone with first NIB donation

The National Investment Bank (NIB) has become the first institution to contribute to the newly established Ghana Support Fund, providing a GH¢100,000 boost to the nation’s sporting future.

In a move seen as a catalyst for athletic development in the nation, the bank’s management handed over the donation to help address the chronic funding gaps facing Ghanaian athletes.

The contribution marks the official operational start for the fund, which was designed to finance infrastructure, improve athlete welfare, and bolster grassroots programmes across the country.

The Minister for Sports and Recreation, Kofi Adams, accepted the donation with a promise of transparency.

He acknowledged that while Ghana possesses immense sporting potential, the lack of consistent financial backing has historically been the biggest hurdle.

“’Every amount received will be used for the purpose for which the fund is being created,” Adams said, assuring the NIB that the money would be managed judiciously to revitalise the sector.

Esther Agyemang Prempeh, NIB’s Acting Chief Client Experience and Corporate Communications Officer, presented the cheque on behalf of the bank’s management.

She emphasised that the bank views sports not just as a pastime, but as a critical pillar for national development.

The Board Chairperson of the Support Fund, Prof. Korye Anim-Wright, and the Fund’s Administrator, Dr David Kofi Mawuvi Wuaku, expressed their gratitude for the bank’s “trailblazing” role.

Dr Wuaku noted that being the first to donate sets a vital precedent for other corporate bodies in Ghana to follow.

The Ghana Support Fund has outlined a clear roadmap for the GH¢100,000 and future contributions, focusing primarily on renovating local facilities to provide safe training environments and identifying young talent through nationwide grassroots programmes.

Additionally, the fund aims to provide essential financial and medical support to athletes representing Ghana on the international stage.

The ceremony was attended by a high-level delegation from the Ministry and the NIB, including Chief Director Wilhelmina Asamoah and several directors of finance and administration, marking a united front for the future of Ghanaian athletics.
