Dame Demands Apology from Kwakye Ofosu Over Alleged Defamatory Claims

Former Attorney-General and Minister of Justice, Godfred Yeboah Dame, has demanded a retraction and apology from the Minister of Government Communications, Felix Kwakye Ofosu, over what he describes as defamatory remarks.

In a letter issued by Dame & Partners, Dame accused the minister of making false and malicious claims during an appearance on Good Morning Ghana on Metro TV on October 10, 2025.

According to the letter, Kwakye Ofosu alleged that Dame, during his tenure from 2021 to 2025, ignored a report by the Criminal Investigations Department (CID) on alleged illegal mining activities involving Akonta Mining Company Limited.

Dame has strongly denied the allegation, insisting that no such report was ever brought to his attention while in office. He described the claim as baseless and harmful to his reputation.

The letter further indicated that during the programme, a co-panellist, Paul Adom-Otchere, challenged the assertion, stating that his own checks showed Dame had no knowledge of any such report.

To support his position, Dame referenced a Right to Information request submitted by a private legal practitioner to the Office of the Attorney-General. The response, dated December 22, 2025, reportedly confirmed that no docket on Akonta Mining was received by the office between 2022 and 2024. It added that the only related docket was submitted on September 15, 2025, after Dame had left office.

Dame argued that the minister’s comments falsely suggested he was complicit in illegal mining and called into question his competence as Attorney-General. He said the statements have been widely circulated across various media platforms, causing significant reputational damage.

He is therefore demanding a public retraction and apology, the removal of the alleged defamatory content from online platforms, and a formal written apology acknowledging the harm caused.

Dame has given the minister seven days to comply, warning that failure to do so will result in legal action, including a defamation lawsuit and a claim for damages.
