Asante Kotoko title hopes fading after bitter ‘Super Clash’ defeat

The Porcupine Warriors face a mountain to climb in the Ghana Premier League title race after a stinging home defeat to arch-rivals Hearts of Oak.

Interim head coach Prince Yaw Owusu admitted that Sunday’s 1-0 loss at the Baba Yara Stadium has left the club’s championship ambitions hanging by a thread.

In a match billed as a season-defining “Super Clash” in Kumasi, the hosts failed to capitalise on home-turf advantage, leaving fans frustrated and the technical team searching for answers.

The decisive blow came early in the first half. Hearts of Oak’s Baba Adamu silenced the Kumasi crowd in the 15th minute, leaping highest to power home a header that would ultimately decide the tie.

Despite sustained pressure from Asante Kotoko, the Phobians held firm, securing a vital three points and condemning the hosts to their third consecutive disappointment across all competitions.

This latest setback follows a bruising week for Kotoko, which included a league defeat to Heart of Lions and a premature FA Cup exit at the hands of Aduana FC.

The result leaves the Porcupine Warriors languishing in fifth place on 35 points. Speaking after the final whistle, a candid Yaw Owusu did not mince his words regarding the club’s trajectory.

“This defeat to Hearts makes our title ambition very difficult,” Owusu conceded. “Now we need to fight very hard before we can get the title.”

With the gap at the top widening, the pressure shifts to the upcoming Matchday 23 fixtures. Kotoko must now find a way to reignite their season away from home.

The squad travels to the Wenchi Sports Stadium this weekend to face Young Apostles.

For Owusu’s men, anything less than a win in Wenchi could see their remaining title hopes vanish entirely.
