Asante Kotoko turn to Maxwell Konadu to rescue season

Asante Kotoko have opened talks with Maxwell Konadu to return as head coach, following the departure of Abdul Karim Zito and a stinging defeat in the Super Clash.

The Porcupine Warriors are moving at pace to steady the ship at the Baba Yara Stadium.

It is understood that Konadu has emerged as the frontrunner to take the permanent vacancy in Kumasi, as the club hierarchy looks to appease a restless fanbase.

The managerial search was triggered by the sudden resignation of Abdul Karim Zito just days before last Sunday, 15 February’s, high-stakes encounter against Accra Hearts of Oak.

Interim boss Prince Owusu took the reins for the fixture, but a 1-0 home defeat to their arch-rivals has left Kotoko desperate for a substantive leader.

Management is now working to ensure the new appointment is made in time to salvage the remaining Ghana Premier League fixtures.

While former Hearts of Oak manager Samuel Boadu was initially linked to the role, the move met immediate and fierce resistance.

Fans quickly voiced their displeasure over Boadu’s potential arrival, and this friction stems largely from comments he made regarding Kotoko during his tenure in Accra.

High-ranking club officials reportedly joined the supporters in kicking against the appointment, citing a lack of cultural fit for the Kumasi-based side.

In contrast, Konadu represents a homecoming. As a club legend with an intimate understanding of the “Kotoko Way,” his candidacy has already galvanised support within the corridors of power.

His previous spells with the club and his deep-rooted ties to the Ashanti region make him the preferred choice to stabilise a dressing room reeling from the Super Clash loss.
