The Chief Justice of Ghana, Justice Paul Baffoe Bonnie, has urged residents of the Okere district in the Eastern Region to help maintain the newly commissioned district court at Adukrom, ensuring its longevity.
Speaking at the commissioning ceremony, he observed that many Ghanaians believe the government is solely based in Accra at the Jubilee House.
He emphasised that Ghanaians are integral to the government and, as such, must act as custodians of government property, aiding in its upkeep.
Justice Baffoe Bonnie expressed his concern that the newly built Adukrom Court could fall into disrepair within a few years.
He stressed that the government has invested in its establishment to facilitate justice for the people of the Okere district and, therefore, the residents must assist in maintaining it for long-term use.
“You see this thing in it beautiful state, we don’t want a situation where we come back here in three years we find the place in…This building is a government building, who is the government?
“We always turn to believe that the government sit in Accra in Jubilee House but actually we’re all part of government.
“We’re going to employee a security officer, the security will sit somewhere and if a thief comes through here, the man sitting down there doesn’t have to say that or shout then I will be doing the work of the security.
“Sometimes we see people dumping trash at place where they shouldn’t dump trash and when you asked them to pick it they’ll tell you if I pick what will Zoomlion will be doing so we must own this place,” he said.
The District Chief Executive (CEO) for Okere, Eric Williams Ayettey, remarked that the commissioning of the Adukrom Court was timely, as residents have, in recent years, had to travel considerable distances to access justice.
He appealed to all residents to collaborate in maintaining the facility for future generations.
