Ghana set to host ICC Men’s T20 World Cup Africa Sub-Regional Qualifier B

Ghana is readying itself for a week of high-stakes cricket as the nation prepares to host the ICC Men’s T20 World Cup Africa Sub-Regional Qualifier B at the Achimota Cricket Oval.

Officials from the Ghana Cricket Association (GCA) and the Local Organising Committee (LOC) met with the media at the venue to outline preparations for the tournament, which runs from 24 to 29 March 2026.

Six nations will battle it out in a competitive round-robin format, with the host nation, Ghana, facing off against Tanzania, Eswatini, Malawi, Seychelles, and Saint Helena.

At stake is more than just regional pride. The top two teams at the end of the week will secure their spots in the Regional Qualifier, moving one step closer to the ultimate goal of competing in the ICC Men’s T20 World Cup 2028.

Nii Okai Evans-Anfom, Chairman of the LOC, told reporters that while the cricket is the primary focus, the event serves a broader purpose for the country.

He stated that the committee is aiming for a memorable tournament that promotes tourism and African friendship, highlighting the potential to strengthen diplomatic and economic ties between the participating countries.

GCA President Emmanuel O. Asare echoed this confidence, confirming that the “Gold Coast” is fully prepared to welcome its neighbours.

He noted that the association has gathered the necessary resources for the team to start training and is hoping to give its best shot.

The Ghanaian national side, led by captain Obed Harvey and head coach Rajinder Parsad, has been undergoing rigorous sessions to ensure they meet modern cricket standards.

Captain Harvey is banking on a strong home turnout to push the team over the line, noting that the squad have been preparing for a long time and are ready to use the facilities to their advantage.

The participating international teams are expected to arrive on 22 March, with the following day, 23 March, dedicated to official practice sessions at Achimota.

The opening match day is scheduled for 24 March, and the tournament will conclude with the final standings on 29 March.

All matches will be held at the Achimota Cricket Oval in Accra, a venue synonymous with the growth of the sport in the region.
