Ghana’s sprint stars secure World Indoor Championship spots

Ghanaian athletics is off to a flying start in 2026, with four athletes officially securing their places for the World Athletics Indoor Championships in Poland next month.

A powerhouse trio of male sprinters and a record-breaking hurdler have all met the stringent entry standards for the global showpiece, which takes place at the Kujawsko-Pomorska Arena in Toruń from 20 to 22 March.

The headlines belong to the men’s 60m squad, where Ghana has demonstrated remarkable depth.

Three athletes have already breached the 6.59-second qualifying barrier, placing the West African nation firmly among the global elite.

Saminu Abdul-Rasheed has emerged as the standout performer of the season so far. He clocked a blistering 6.54 seconds at the Jarvis Scott Invitational in Lubbock, Texas.

Not only was this a personal best, but it also stood as the fastest time in the world at the point of recording.

He is joined by Barnabas Kobby Asante Aggerh, who showed his class with a swift 6.57-second finish, and Mustapha Alufar Bopkin, who rounded off the trio by hitting the qualifying mark on the dot with a 6.59-second run.

The presence of three qualified athletes in a single event signals a new era for Ghanaian sprinting, successfully transitioning their outdoor prowess to the indoor boards.

In the women’s 60m hurdles, Evonne Britton has confirmed her status as a key asset for Team Ghana. She secured her spot in Toruń with a commanding 7.99-second performance.

Britton, a former World U20 silver medallist, officially transferred her allegiance from the United States to Ghana in April 2024.

After making her international debut for the Black Stars at the African Senior Athletics Championships in Cameroon, she is now set to represent the nation on the world stage.

This quartet’s achievements signal Ghana’s readiness to compete against the world’s best, building on recent outdoor successes and carrying national pride under the Black Star.

With the World Athletics Indoor Championships Kujawy Pomorze 26 just weeks away, the focus now shifts to final preparations.

Ghanaian fans will be watching closely as these four athletes head to Poland, hoping to turn these qualifying times into podium finishes.

The current form of the squad suggests that the “Black Star” is ready to shine brightly in Toruń.
