Jordan Ayew: ‘I never thought I would become a captain’

Jordan Ayew has described his rise to the Ghana captaincy as a “destiny” he never anticipated, as the Leicester City forward prepares to lead the Black Stars at the 2026 World Cup.

The 34-year-old veteran, who has become the linchpin of Ghana’s national side, admitted that while representing his country was a lifelong ambition, wearing the armband was never part of his personal script.

Speaking to Asempa FM, Ayew reflected on a career that has seen him evolve from a young hopeful into a prolific talisman.

“I am still living my dream, and I don’t know when it will end,” Ayew said. “I never thought I would become a captain, because it was never in my mind. I believe in destiny, and I am still hoping for more.”

Ayew’s leadership has been defined by more than just his presence in the dressing room.

His on-field statistics during the 2026 World Cup qualification cycle were among the best on the continent, silencing critics who questioned his longevity.

The forward registered 14 goal contributions—consisting of seven goals and seven assists—propelling Ghana to the top of their qualifying group and securing their spot in North America.

His output during the window surpassed many of Europe’s elite forwards, proving that the former Crystal Palace man remains one of the continent’s most consistent performers.

The Black Stars find themselves in a challenging Group L for the upcoming tournament. They are set to face England, Croatia, and Panama in what many analysts describe as one of the most competitive brackets in the competition.

The fixture against England is expected to be a focal point for fans, pitting Ayew against several of his Premier League contemporaries.

Despite his veteran status, Ayew’s message remains one of ambition. With the World Cup on the horizon, the captain suggests that his most significant contribution to Ghanaian football history is still to come.
