Asante Kotoko’s title aspirations took another dent on Sunday as a frustrating 0-0 draw against Vision FC left interim boss Prince Yaw Owusu lamenting a “mess” in the final third.
Despite dominating possession and playing against ten men for a significant portion of the match, the Porcupine Warriors failed to find a breakthrough at the Baba Yara Stadium.
The stalemate leaves the Kumasi giants stranded in fourth place, now trailing the Ghana Premier League leaders by seven points.
The statistics told a story of total control met by a clinical deficit. Kotoko commanded 57% of the ball and peppered the visitors’ goal with 17 attempts.
However, despite registering nine shots on target, they could not bypass a resilient Vision FC backline.
Even when the visitors were reduced to ten men, Kotoko struggled to capitalise, often seeing promising build-up play disintegrate at the edge of the penalty area.
A visibly frustrated Prince Yaw Owusu did not mince his words following the Week 24 encounter.
While praising the flow of the game, he admitted his side is currently their own worst enemy.
“It was an open game. Vision is not a bad side; when they get the ball, they do what they want to do,” Owusu remarked.
“We also play when we get the ball, but when we get to the final turf, we just mess it up, and it’s a problem we need to work on.”
With the gap at the top widening, the pressure is mounting on Owusu to find a solution to his side’s inefficiency.
While the “approach play” is functioning, the Porcupine Warriors are rapidly running out of time to salvage their season.
If Kotoko are to climb back into the title race, the wastefulness at the Baba Yara must end—starting with their next outing.
