Pep Guardiola hails ‘DNA’ of Antoine Semenyo as Manchester City hunt down Arsenal

Manchester City manager Pep Guardiola has lauded the “special rhythm” of January signing Antoine Semenyo, claiming the forward’s impact at the Etihad Stadium transcends his impressive goal tally.

The Ghana international has enjoyed a prolific start to life in Manchester since his winter move from AFC Bournemouth, netting five goals and providing two assists in just nine appearances.

However, speaking ahead of Saturday’s crucial Premier League trip to St James’ Park to face Newcastle United, Guardiola insisted that Semenyo’s tactical intelligence is what truly sets him apart.

Guardiola highlighted the 26-year-old’s ability to operate across the front three as a vital asset for the defending champions.

“It’s not just scoring a lot of goals,” Guardiola told reporters. “The strikers and the players who play up front are so important. Not just that.”

“He makes a special rhythm, his versatility to play many positions up front and in the three positions. He has it in his DNA. His impact has been really good.”

The City boss also credited the club’s dressing room culture for the speed at which the Ghanaian has settled in the North West, noting that the long-standing members of the squad “embrace” new arrivals to ensure they adapt quickly.

City’s visit to Tyneside carries significant weight in a tightening title race. A victory against Eddie Howe’s Newcastle would see City close the gap on league leaders Arsenal to just two points.

Crucially, City still hold a game in hand over the Gunners, who face a high-stakes North London Derby against Tottenham Hotspur on Sunday.

Since arriving from the South Coast, Semenyo has provided Guardiola with a dynamic alternative to Erling Haaland and Phil Foden.

His record of seven goal contributions in nine games is formidable, but it is his work rate and positional fluidity that have caught the eye of the coaching staff.

His ability to drop deep and link play has mirrored the “false nine” patterns Guardiola often prefers, while his physicality has troubled established top-flight defences.

For City fans, the seamless integration of the former Bournemouth man suggests that the club’s January recruitment strategy may be the deciding factor as they chase another Premier League trophy.
