President Mahama promises three new stadiums in 2026

President John Dramani Mahama has committed to a sweeping transformation of Ghana’s sporting landscape, pledging to build three new stadiums in 2026 as part of a long-term plan to equip every region with modern facilities.

Speaking during a ‘Citizen Engagement’ event in Sunyani as part of his tour of the Bono Region, the President told supporters that the initiative is a core pillar of his government’s strategy to decentralise development and unearth athletic talent across the country.

The President’s “stadium-a-year” policy aims to address a long-standing deficit in regional infrastructure.

By targeting areas currently lacking professional venues, the government hopes to level the playing field for athletes outside the capital.

“When you look at our manifesto, we stated that all regions that do not have stadiums will be provided with one,” President Mahama told the crowd.

He further explained that the 2026 budget already factors in the construction of the first three stadiums, with the government committed to maintaining this momentum annually until every region is covered.

Crucially, these new developments are being designed as multi-purpose facilities. Rather than standing idle between match days, the government intends for the venues to serve as integrated economic centres for their host cities.

President Mahama confirmed that the design phase is already underway, with architects currently drafting blueprints that move beyond traditional sports seating.

The final structures will incorporate commercial spaces to support local businesses and provide facilities for multiple sporting disciplines.

The Bono Region tour has served as a platform for the President to highlight key development projects, with sports infrastructure taking centre stage.

The administration believes that by integrating commerce with sport, these facilities will pay for themselves while revitalising local economies.

As the 2026 fiscal plan takes shape, sports fans and local contractors alike will be watching closely to see which three regions are the first to break ground on these new landmarks.
