Mourinho: Managing Real Madrid fallout ‘not easy’ amid racism allegations

Benfica boss José Mourinho admits he is struggling to contain the emotional fallout from his side’s fractious Champions League encounter with Real Madrid.

The Portuguese manager, currently under fire for his handling of the incident, described the days following the match as a major test of his leadership.

The clash was marred by allegations that Benfica winger Gianluca Prestianni racially abused Real Madrid’s Vinícius Júnior.

The tension began on the pitch when Vinícius Júnior reported the alleged abuse to match officials.

While the Brazilian’s teammate, Kylian Mbappé, reportedly backed the claim, Prestianni has since issued a firm denial.

Mourinho has found himself at the centre of a media storm after he appeared to suggest that Vinícius Júnior’s goal celebration played a role in instigating the crowd’s reaction, a stance that has drawn widespread condemnation from anti-racism campaigners.

Speaking to ESPN ahead of the return fixture, Mourinho pivoted from tactical analysis to the psychological toll the week has taken on his squad and himself.

He noted that the game was truly demanding in every aspect, maintaining that until the 50th minute, it was a match of maximum intensity both physically and tactically.

However, the “Special One” admitted the challenge shifted significantly after the final whistle.

He acknowledged that from the 50th minute until now, it has not been easy to manage the emotional weight of everything that has happened and continues to happen.

The timing of the turmoil is far from ideal for the Portuguese giants. Benfica must now travel to the Santiago Bernabéu for the decisive second leg this Wednesday, February 25.

With the eyes of the footballing world on Madrid, the pressure is on UEFA and both clubs to ensure the focus returns to the football, though the shadow of the first-leg allegations remains long.
