England veteran Kyle Walker has announced his retirement from international football, just three months before the Three Lions kick off their 2026 FIFA World Cup campaign.
The Burnley defender, who earned 95 caps and scored one goal during a decorated international career, confirmed his decision on Tuesday, 10 March.
His departure creates a significant void in Thomas Tuchel’s squad as England prepare for a challenging Group L, which features Croatia, Panama, and a highly anticipated showdown with Ghana’s Black Stars in North America.
Walker, formerly of Manchester City, bows out after more than a decade as a mainstay in the national side.
In a statement released on Tuesday, the 35-year-old said representing his country had been the pinnacle of his career.
“After more than a decade of representing my country, I have decided to retire from international football,” Walker said.
“Playing for England has always been a great honour in my career, and I will always be proud of it.”
He added that he intended to travel to the tournament—hosted across the United States, Canada, and Mexico—to support his former teammates from the stands.
“I want to thank all my teammates, coaches, administrators, fans, and everyone who contributed to this journey. The fans’ support has been a huge motivation for the team, and I’m looking forward to joining them in supporting the players at the World Cup.”
Walker’s exit comes at a pivotal moment for England. Despite their status as perennial heavyweights, the Three Lions have not lifted the trophy since their lone triumph against West Germany in 1966.
The 2026 tournament represents a fresh opportunity to end 60 years of hurt, but the group stage offers no easy passage.
The meeting with Ghana is already being billed as a standout fixture of the round, with the Black Stars looking to exploit an England defence now missing one of its most experienced assets.
The defender finishes his international career with 95 caps and five major tournament appearances under his belt, having recently made the move to Burnley FC.
