The Member of Parliament for New Juaben South, Michael Okyere Baafi, has called on authorities to urgently arrest and prosecute individuals behind the shutdown of a National Health Insurance Authority (NHIA) office in Ejisu.
The facility was reportedly locked by a group of aggrieved youth, believed to be affiliated with the National Democratic Congress (NDC), who were protesting the appointment of a new manager.
Speaking in an interview with JoyNews journalist James Avedzi, Mr. Baafi condemned the incident, describing it as unlawful and detrimental to Ghana’s democratic development. He urged the government to act swiftly by launching investigations and ensuring that those responsible face justice.
According to the MP, taking firm action against the perpetrators would serve as a deterrent to others and help preserve the integrity of the country’s public institutions.
“This is a serious matter. I believed by now such incidents would be a thing of the past, with government focusing on national development. It is worrying that these uncivilised actions continue to occur,” he stated.
Baafi further questioned the actions of the individuals involved, expressing concern over the disregard for legal procedures and the welfare of workers affected by the closure.
He warned that failure to address such incidents decisively could erode Ghana’s democratic gains, stressing that the country’s democratic progress must be protected at all costs.
