Six people have been confirmed dead and seven others injured following a fatal crash involving a petrol tanker on the Accra–Nsawam Highway near Okanta in the early hours of Saturday, February 14, 2026.
The incident occurred around 4:45 a.m., turning a busy stretch of the highway into a scene of devastation as flames engulfed multiple vehicles. According to the Ghana National Fire Service (GNFS), three victims died instantly at the scene, while three others who were transported to the Koforidua Regional Hospital later passed away from their injuries.
In a statement signed by Eastern Regional Public Relations Officer, Ignatius K. Baidoo, the Service indicated that a total of 15 casualties were recorded, comprising 11 males and four females. Among them, two males and one female were pronounced dead at the scene.
Their bodies were handed over to the Police for preservation and further investigations.
Personnel from the Suhum Fire Station responded swiftly after receiving a distress call. However, firefighters arrived to find the vehicles fully engulfed in flames, with thick smoke and intense heat hampering rescue operations.
The seven injured victims are currently receiving medical care, while authorities work to determine the cause of the accident. The tragedy has left families grieving and renewed concerns about safety on one of the country’s major highways.
